Magrudergrind, Yautja at Lookout Lounge

News today begins with a wealth of photo coverage from around the scene. First, HN contributor Ben Semisch went to Lookout Lounge to shoot grindcore band Magrudergrind with tour partner Yautja. The Brooklyn-based trio is currently on the last leg of a punishing 37 day U.S. tour in support of its latest album II, out earlier this year on Relapse Records. Nebraska bands Y-Incision and Feeder/Gainer joined the bill.

See Through Dresses, Fliight, Dylan Ryan/Sand at The Commons

HN multimedia intern Lauren Farris went to The Commons last Friday evening to see L.A-based rock trio Dylan Ryan/Sand perform with the psychedelic-rock sextet Fliight (Columbia, Missouri) and Omaha punk-rock group See Through Dresses.

With 2014 release Circa, Dylan Ryan/Sand trio is a continuation of Chicago-born drummer and composer Dylan Ryan’s long list of musical projects, including his time spent playing with Cursive, Herculaneum and Icy Demons in L.A. Alongside guitarist Timothy Young (David Sylvian, Reggie Watts, Wayne Horvitz) and bassist Devin Hoff (Nels Cline Singers, Yoko Ono, Cibo Matto), Dylan Ryan/Sand combines jazz fusion group play with enveloping metal solos.

Dylan Ryan/ Sand and Fliight played the night before at O’Leaver’s Pub with Omaha garage-rock group Hussies, and See Through Dresses had just returned from Sand’s homebase of L.A. on its West Coast tour.

The Way Out, Sam Martin, The Faint on HN Radio

Monday means a fresh HN Radio playlist at the top of the site. This week, we’re spinning new music by The Way Out, Sam Adam Martin, The Faint, Tara Vaughan BigChill, plus live tracks by Lodgings (which released an LP last week) and The Good Life, which plays The Waiting Room tomorrow night with Speedy Ortiz and Oquoa.

We also had a handful of submissions this past week, including “Ghosts” by Lincoln electro-pop band Sheridanway. It’s the title track to the group’s recently released album, which can be heard via Soundcloud. Sheridanway celebrates the release Saturday, May 28 at Vega, 350 Canopy St, with Nick Dahlquist (RSVP here). Plus, Live Minds Affinity producer Andy Boonstra dug out a two-year-old track, “Slow Ride,” made with Omaha hard rock/funk band We Be Lions.

Songs by Conchance (who announces the release date of new solo LP La Maga today), Sucettes (which drops a new album this weekend at Reverb Lounge, RSVP here) and Omaha producer Chikadibia round out the playlist.

Musicians/bands: submit music for HN Radio consideration to news@hearnebraska.org.

Concert Round-Up

Tonight, Brooklyn-based punk-rock four piece So So Glos plays O’Leaver’s, 1322 S Saddle Creek, alongside Canadian rock group The Dirty Nil and Omaha hard rock trio Montee Men.

Known for its high energy and involvement in Brooklyn’s DIY punk scene, The So So Glos project started over two decades ago with brothers Alex and Ryan Levine and their step-brother, Zach Staggers, with the later addition of guitarist Matt Elkin. The group recently released its newest album Kamikaze, where it approaches cathartic lyricism and hard-hitting instrumentation with enthusiasm. Consequence of Sound reviewer Collin Brennan wrote that the album has “the manic energy to keep a certain kind of basement party going all night long.” The show starts at 9 p.m. with a $5 cover. RSVP here.

Also tonight, Down Under Lounge hosts Metal Monday part four. Metal Monday is series of free concerts that showcase Omaha and Lincoln’s underground metal scene. Tonight, the Bellevue-based progressive metal five-piece Mirrors will be performing alongside blues-metal duo Rift and death metal trio Obesity. The show starts at 9 p.m. and there is no cover charge. RSVP here.

Head to our statewide calendar here to plan your concert-going week. If you do not see your show or one you plan to attend, add it yourself here or email us at news@hearnebraska.org. Use that same email to send news tips, story ideas and song submissions.
