Mini-rock-festival in downtown Lincoln; Jack Lion tonight; Conor Oberst on Kimmel; Hoyer tour

Chalk it up as another multi-venue night of shows centered in downtown Lincoln’s venue-triangle.

Boximus Maximus, a one-night mini-festival, has Duffy’s Tavern, The Bourbon and The Zoo Bar teaming up.

The Nov. 29 show features 12 bands and doesn’t stray far from Lincoln’s edgy, punk and metal sensibilities. The schedule will be released later this week, but see the full lineup below and RSVP to the $5 evening here.

Blue Sky Angel Parade
Bogusman
The Crayons
Dirty Talker
Domestica

Conor Oberst appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, now in the midst of a second wave of publicity for his May 2014 solo record Upside Down Mountain. Gone are the boys of Dawes, replaced in Oberst’s backing band by Bright Eyes’ Nate Walcott, guitarist Jonathan Wilson (who produced the record) and Miwi La Lupa, who is on Oberst’s Team Love Records.

If you want an upbeat talk-show-fit song from the album, Oberst’s options are fairly limited, considering the record’s marshy middle. Here, he returns to “Zigzagging Toward the Light” — which he played on Fallon earlier this year — for a performance that wilds out a bit at the end. Unfortunately, like many Late Night TV mixes (save Letterman’s, which Oberst also played this year), the soundstage is weirdly unsupportive of how loud or full it must sound to Oberst and the guys as they thrash about.

After releasing their second album on Friday at The Bourbon, Josh Hoyer and the Shadowboxers play the first show of their West Coast tour tonight at Hog Hollow in Salt Lake City. RSVP here.

We recorded an album review podcast of Living By The Minute and discuss its growth from the Shadowboxers’ self-titled debut, released a mere 10 months ago. Hear it here:

Desert Noises will roll through Duffy’s Tavern for an early show on Nov. 24.

Duffy’s booker Jeremy Buckley says the Utah-based arid-rock band, which played Vega earlier this year, wanted to play Duffy’s before they head home at the end of a heavy touring year. That included stops at Lollapalooza and South by Southwest.

Generally, Monday is open mic for comedy at Duffy’s, so in the interest of maintaining that tradition, Desert Noises will play 8-10 p.m. with comedy night following.

The show is $5. RSVP here.

The group released its JAC EP earlier this summer.
