We received an informal taste of Simon Joyner’s new album last summer at ARC studios, when we briefly sat in on a recording session.
This morning’s taste is more official, as Stereogum premiered the first release from Joyner’s forthcoming Grass, Branch & Bone. Check out “You Got Under My Skin” here. Stereogum reports the new album will be out March 17 on Woodsist, Jeremy Earl’s sometimes-folk, sometimes-rock record label.
Joyner, if you’re playing catch-up, is one of Omaha’s most beloved music figures, a lo-fi enthusiast who’s released 12 albums over the last two decades. Make that 13 with Grass, Branch & Bone.
“You Got Under My Skin” is some of the sweetest Joyner we’ve heard in a while. His band, The Ghosts, many of whom played on this album, is capable of sheer cacophony, but no such ruckus here. This song mosies along in rich acoustic tones with Joyner’s famously unsteady singing voice as the only cracks in the sidewalk.

A couple show announcements caught our eye this week.
A Wilhelm Scream and Teenage Bottlerocket will play The Hideout on March 15 for an all-ages show with Ties. Tickets are $10, get them here. A Wilhelm Scream and Teenage Bottlerocket will be on tour supporting Pennywise, which will not play the Omaha show. It’s tucked between Pennywise dates in Englewood, Colo. and Minneapolis.
Massachusetts-based A Wilhelm Scream and its former incarnations has released six full-length albums in the last 15 years. 2013’s Partycrasher received high praise from critics in the hardcore scene.
Teenage Bottlerocket has gained renown for its high-energy skate-punk. The Wyoming band released Freak Out! in 2012 and has promised a new release on Rise Records later this year.
And then, One Percent Productions announced Two Gallants will play Reverb Lounge on April 22 with Blank Range.
The San Francisco duo released two records on Saddle Creek in 2006 and 2007. Its most recent release, 2012’s The Bloom and the Blight, was with ATO. The indie garage band’s fifth record, We Are Undone, is set for release on Feb. 3. RSVP here.

Tonight, California X and Halfwit play The Bourbon with Night Push. Massachusetts-based California X released Nights in the Dark, the band’s second full-length earlier this month. The album continues the garage punk tradition of 2013’s self-titled record. With garage metal outfit Halfwit, think of The Bourbon as a beefed-up basement tonight. RSVP here.
At The Waiting Room, pop rock trio Jukebox the Ghost plays with Twin Forks and Secret Someones. Earlier this week, we featured an interview with Jukebox the Ghost pianist and singer Ben Thornewill to discuss the band’s intent for its new album and soundtracking a children’s cartoon. Read it here.
Twin Forks is fronted by Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional fame. The band released its self-titled debut full-length last year, a 12-track folk rock record on the success of which they played a dozen festivals last year.
RSVP to the show here.
