Concert review: Gongfermour, Man Vs Animals, Sweatpantsdaze at Milk Run
By Jhalisa Robinson
Gongfermour synth player/vocalist Dave Diction played wearing an Austin Powers-inspired costume with sunglasses. The band brought comic relief to the crowd with Man Vs. Animals and Sweatpantsdaze throughout their set at Milk Run the first Saturday after Election week.
Man Vs. Animals furiously played with heavy intentions and engaged the audience in the stage space of Milk Run. The band’s fifth album Get A Grip, and thus its performance Saturday, had a transition from modern, somber punk rock into upbeat 90’s punk. The performance of lead vocalist Tim Cruz delivered versatile transitions as he performed with both Man Vs. Animals and Sweatpantsdaze. The band’s lead guitar carried their sound throughout their last song, “Hard Dicks,” which showed the band’s sense of humor.
Gongfermour took the stage next, and was the only local band playing for the evening. “We Ain’t Got No Soul” from their EP Librarians in Space set the a tone for the evening with a somber, aggressive tune.
“This song is about depression,” Synth player/vocalist Dave Diction said before they started playing. The synthpunk band of four brought an eeriness with their showmanship, which featured occasional French lyrics and robotic synth playing. The band’s drummer, Rat Think, wore a black zipper mask. Lead singer Dinghuaas matched with black attire that contrasted with a pointed, white guitar.
Sweapantdaze played the final set of the evening. The band’s songs were soft, mellow and bouncy, with elements of 90’s punk rock. This gave Cruz versatility with his ability to go from a grungy sound to a mellow, more playful sound.
The show’s intimate turnout was an appropriate tone setter for all of the bands’ performance, and demonstrated their professionalism, passion, and love of performing.
