Tatsuya Nakatani and His Orchestra of Gongs
Using handmade instruments such as bowed gongs, cymbals and singing bowls, Tatsuya Nakatani creates a different sort of percussion music.
Nakatani will be conducting a performance of the Nakatani Gong Orchestra, an experimental collaboration, on Saturday at 9 p.m. The concert will take place at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha with the efforts of local musicians Dapose, Teal Gardner, Dustin Bushon, Katie F-S, Rob Phillips and Jeff Thompson. Nakatani will also join Elephant Revival in Lincoln on Sunday at The Bourbon Theatre for a concert at 8 p.m.
Thompson is looking forward to participating in the show and helping to bring this unique style of music to Omaha.
“Omaha and Lincoln have vibrant music and art scenes, but there is little in the way of experimental music here,” Thompson said. “We need more venues and support for this kind of work. … I hope having something like this at a respected venue like Bemis will help get people excited about new sounds.”
