About two minutes into it’s cover of “Young Doctors In Love,” Mint Wad Willy captures the creeping dread of a fleeting intimate moment.
The Digital Leather original is playfully anxious and lo-fi, leisurely moving forward like a video game day dream. Sean Foree’s lyrics describe the desperation without vocally or tonally committing to it.
In contrast, the Omaha garage rock band rode a surfy wash of distortion and pop punk harmonies until the breakdown. Then the dissonance buzzed throughout O’Leaver’s as Nick Johnston and Derek LeVasseur waveringly repeated the finishing line “Hey … I think we’re alone now.”
Mint Wad Willy plays next month with Noah’s Ark Was A Spaceship (who releases a brand new album) and Eric In Outerspace (RSVP here). Watch the band cover “Young Doctors In Love” at O’Leaver’s during HN’s Take Cover concert.
