[Edem Soul Music plays Slowdown this Friday, Dec 16 in celebration of the release of new album A Life Amongst Others. Both and Mesonjixx also perform. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 day-of; RSVP here.]
The earthly qualities of Edem Soul Music’s Gold Coast-inspired soul always seem to pour from something deep within, drawing on what feels like eons of experiences to soothe what ails.
Like the singer/songwriter’s most affecting tracks, a simple, almost innate rhythm pumps through “The Well Song,” urging the sparse yet soulful track forward. Edem’s smooth, rangy voice gives inner peace to the narrator’s heartbeat, which feels as though it has just slowed with relief.
The unrelenting cadence of “The Well Song” borders on eerie, even while Edem’s soulful voice colors the spiritual both hopeful and tortured. It alludes to an endurance: she has been through the ringer to erase her problems. Now, seated by the edge of the well, the lot of change dropped upon them, there is peace within hope.
Edem Soul Music releases new album A Life Amongst Others this Friday, Dec 16 at Slowdown and, word has it, she’ll unveil a new band and new instrument to go with it.
