[Editor's note: This Saturday, Hear Nebraska hosts Take Cover Omaha at The Waiting Room, starting at 9 p.m. Take Cover features Nebraska musicians covering songs by other Nebraskans. To preview, performers will share their takes on the songs they're covering.]

I'll be playing a song off of En Garde by Criteria.

It was one of the first few albums in my life I obsessed over. I loved every song. There are a lot of breakup jammers on the album; I'd like to think that, at the time, I felt that same heartbreak. Probably not, because I was in high school when this album came out and my biggest heartbreaks were yet to be had. (I hope this statement doesn't make you feel old. Actually, it makes me feel old.)

I remember buying En Garde from Homer's after work one day. I thought the album cover was cool, and "Criteria" was a name I probably saw in The Reader. I really had no idea what they sounded like and didn't know they were from Omaha. I just didn't make that connection at all. Also, that album was on Initial Records at the time (Saddle Creek released it later).

I figured it out when I heard the line, "…and go back to Omaha, a place I know I will be safe." It was exciting to discover all these great bands from here. At first, I was in disbelief. Like Omaha? Omaha… Nebraska? I felt proud, and I knew that I wanted to be part of it.

See if you can guess which song Bertuldo will be covering. Listen to Criteria's En Garde:
