Remembering “A Situation” Compilations | A Conversation

words by Michael Todd | interview by Meagan Jungman

It all begins with a conversation. A chance for ideas to coalesce into something real.

For the A Situation compilations, a conversation in 2003 saw to the start of a five-album series, released yearly starting in 2004. The "meeting of musical minds," as the compilation's organizer Malcom Miles calls it, also helped to inspire Tery Daly's Star City Scene. Later on, Dan Jenkins of Ideal Cleaners also began to document Nebraska music history with his own site, The Band Broke Up, which began, of course, after another conversation.

Eric Aspengren joined Miles, Daly and Jenkins at The Coffee House this past Friday evening to reminisce about A Situation, discussing its genesis, what impact the albums had on the music scene and how it might be different if it were assembled this year. Listen in on the four as they remember, and listen to the first compilation, A Situation Presents Itself, further below.

Copies of the Situation compilations are in stock at Lefty's Records in Lincoln.
