“Plastic People” is other side of the dark, heavy Red Cities coin you hear on “Military Song.”
The latter was the first song the Lincoln rock band premiered via Hear Nebraska, thematically slowed to a rock-operatic crawl. Conversely, “Plastic People” comes off as a bit of vocal satire over a defter, faster version of the band. Singer Byron Anway’s high wailing is just pure enough to give you the sense he could sing a pliable pop song if he liked, but with enough damage to let you know what Red Cities’ real angle is: to maintain a spiky punk ethos even in a baggier suit. Likewise, the rapid guitars coax bassist Eric Aspengren and drummer Josh Leeker into a light-footed race.
Red Cities’ debut LP comes out Saturday at their Zoo Bar release show. It will be released on Modern Peasant Records, which Red Cities guitarist Matt Bokovoy helps run. The album was recorded at Fuse in Lincoln with engineer Charlie Johnson.
RSVP here. The billing is a who’s-who of Lincoln’s harder acts, including Domestica, Dirty Talker and Bogusman.
If you want to do a Red Cities show right, consider ear plugs and order only stiff drinks.
