It's hard to believe that it's been 20 years since Lincoln-born pop musician Matthew Sweet's breakout album Girlfriend was released. Unless you had a satellite dish (and we didn't), you couldn't get MTV back in 1991 in Imperial, Neb. So I didn't see the video for the title track that catapulted the record into the nation's living rooms. In fact, I didn't hear it until after I'd fallen in love with Sweet's fifth album, 100% Fun. I remember buying the Girlfriend CD from the little record store in the North Platte Mall, but I still didn't know Sweet was from Nebraska. Too bad there wasn't a website that burned these things into Nebraskans' heads back then …
The Onion A.V. Club interviewed Sweet recently about the record, and since he didn't have much of a story about the title track — "It was just something he banged out without much thought; in his mind it was the “dumb” song of the Girlfriend bunch" — they focused on the second song, "I've Been Waiting." He talks about the song and performs it in the video below. Enjoy.
