Laura Burhenn’s voice lends itself well to a choir of her own vocals.
At Take Cover, Vol. 2 at The Sydney in Omaha, the frontwoman for The Mynabirds looped backing tracks to create a faithful, soulful rendition of “The Fox” by fellow Omahan Orenda Fink and Scalpelist in O+S. It’s a reverie that makes you want to step into the mist, close your eyes and feel the cool wind blow through the woods.
Just Burhenn, her trusty red keyboard and a looping pedal: That’s all this song needs to recreate a story of a fox brought back to health by the storyteller, a bedrock theme on which your imagination can create an alternate interpretation. Listen to the original, and watch as Burhenn multiplies her voice to paint her scene and plant a few tall, tall trees in The Sydney.
