I used to go to concerts all the time in Omaha. Local music is sort of how I found my gateway into almost every relationship I have now here — I met my friends through local shows, I met my husband that way, and we even lived in a house with a band for a few years. (And the guitarist is now married to my business partner Sarah — another person I met through the local music scene in Omaha.) After a while, I stopped attending shows and buying records, and I barely even noticed the apathy I had developed toward it all until I started looking for shows to go to again and none of them sounded good.
For whatever reason several years ago, I just wasn’t really relating to anything local that was coming out anymore. But in the last year there have been a ton of awesome bands popping up — almost a renewal of creativity and passion in the Omaha Sound — and I’ve fallen hard for several of them for their foot-stomping anthems, dance beats, and catchy afternoon-music perfect for listening to while I work.
Tonight I got to go to the Maha Music Festival for the first time — and I feel like the last person in my friends group to check it out. Since I’m getting back into all of this music so enthusiastically and quickly, I couldn’t wait to go. Here are some samples from some of my favorite bands. Just sharing.
The Conduits
Fronted by my friend Jenna Morrison, video directed by Jon Tvrdik. (Sarah’s husband, my ex-roommate!)
The Mynabirds
This band is the sweet gentle warrior woman Laura Burhenn, and the video is again directed by Jon. (Should also mentioned that it was filmed in my uncle’s family business, Johnny’s Steakhouse in South O!)
UUVVWWZ
Good background work music.
Icky Blossoms
Dance Party Weird-Out. I love ALL of their songs.
These are such good, good, good, special people making good music. I should add that bonus cool bands that I got to see at Maha were Garbage (YES YES YES YES) and Dum Dum Girls, the most based goddesses in life. Enjoyyyy.
