Vita and the Woolf is the brainchild of 25 year old musician, Jennifer Pague. The name was originally inspired by the love relationship between the novelists Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf during Pague’s studies in Europe in 2012.
What initially began as a seven piece orchestra of sorts in 2012, Vita and the Woolf went through various band members and changes until August 2014 when Pague met drummer, Adam Shumski who is still a current member today.
Vita and the Woolf self-released their first EP Fang Song in September 2014. A seven song record completely produced and recorded in Pague’s parents basement in Downingtown, PA. Much of the original music from that first album has progressed into the style and arrangements of music that the band plays today. Originally having more of a folk sound, Vita’s sound has developed into an array of electronic anthems. But one thing remains constant, and that are the powerhouse vocals from Pague herself.
The majority of Vita and the Woolf’s music is vocal driven and includes a wide range of harmonies. The haunting harmonies and vocal layering combined with intricate instrumentation and simple drumming produce a sound that reflects R&B, soul, jazz, and powerful choral ballads.
Vita and the Woolf has gone on multiple self-booked and DIY tours including stops to SXSW in 2015 and 2016. They have performed at XPoNential Music Festival in 2015 on the same lineup as St. Vincent, My Morning Jacket, and Courtney Barnett. They have also opened for Milk & Bone, Christine Perri & Colbie Caillat, and The Parlour Tricks. They are going on a cross-country tour in October supporting Rasputina. The new album entitled TUNNELS which was recorded and produced at Spice House Sound in Philadelphia will be released in January 2017. The first single from the album, “Brett” was premiered on NYLON. You should expect to be hearing more from Vita and the Woolf very soon.
