Sand was formed by drummer Dylan Ryan (Red Krayola, Cursive, Tim Kasher) in Los Angeles in 2011. Initially consisting of Tim Young (the Late Late Show band) and Devin Hoff (Julia Holter) the trio aimed to capture their favorite instrumental elements of Black Sabbath and Joni Mitchell. Three releases later (Cuneiform records and EF recordings) Ryan added vocals to the mix and after re-discovering Black Flag, Slip It In, shifted the focus to the heavier side of the spectrum. Ryan explains, “When we toured with Cursive I thought we should have some bigger sounding material so I wrote a bunch of riffs that became the next two albums.”
On singing from the drums, Ryan cryptically elaborates, “It’s nice to have those vocal moments to contrast ripping leads. A wiser person than I once said, there is no ‘I in team’ but there are two in ripping lead. My two biggest influences are Karen Carpenter and Ozzy.”
Since recruiting longtime collaborators, bassist Willie Blair and Guitarist Chris Welcome (The Flying Luttenbachers), the band has solidified into one of the most intriguing acts in proto-metal.
Blair said in a 2013 NPR interview, “I’ve been playing with Chris since 7th grade so doing this is really easy for us.” Indeed the group attended New Trier High school outside Chicago and the shared history becomes apparent in dynamic group interplay during open solo sections.
“We honestly just try to sound like the first three Sabbath albums” Ryan says. “Of course we totally miss, because we’re mortals, but if we get somewhere in the ballpark, that’s fine.”
