Ameritas sponsors Take Cover Lincoln, Life Is Cool to reimagine Bogusman
We are pleased to announce Ameritas as the presenting sponsor for our sixth-annual Take Cover Lincoln.
Thanks to their help, 12 Nebraska acts will reinterpret some of their favorite classic and contemporary Nebraska songs at this year’s concert on Friday, Jan 27 at The Bourbon. Twelve more will perform the following night, Jan 28, at The Waiting Room for Take Cover Omaha, presented by Medical Solutions. Attendance is free with a $10 suggested donation; RSVP here and here, respectively, for the lineups thus far.
Lincoln pop ensemble Life Is Cool will take the stage this year, adding its ‘80s flair to one new and one old Nebraska track. The former is Bogusman’s “Song About Chess” from its debut self-titled album released August 2016. Life Is Cool explains its choice below:
“The Bogusmen are near and dear. In addition to [guitarist/vocalist] Nate [Luginbill] and [bassist] Andy [Peterson] helping James form a touring version of PHARMACY SPIRITS, Nasty Nate long lent his talents as the original LIC bassist. Alex in particular really enjoys this year’s self-titled Bogusman LP and suggested “Song About Chess” as a cover pick. As emulating Bogusman’s post-hardcore grit would surely be a departure from LIC’s pop synthabilities, we tucked that track into a bed of white satin and kissed it good night. We’re quite proud of our sleeping giant.”
We’ll announce the completion of the Lincoln lineup and more cover choices as the concerts draw nearer.

Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards unveils performance lineup
The Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards has announced the performers who will appear at its 11th annual awards show next month.
Dominique Morgan, Sack of Lions, Aly Peeler, Emily Ward, The Shineys and 3D In Your Face will take the stage throughout the event on Sunday, Feb 19, this year in a new home at the Omaha Design Center, 1502 Cuming St. All are nominated for OEAs, with Morgan up for Artist of the Year.
Attendees will also be treated to performances by Performance Poet nominee Lite Pol, Best Leading Actress nominee Mary Kelly and Shelterbelt Theatre’s Hannah Mayer. Both Kelly and Mayer worked on Shelterbelt’s production of “The Feast,” which is up for eight awards including Best Dramatic Play.
In all, the OEAA will hand out awards in more than 50 categories this year in music, performing arts, visual arts and technical arts. Find the complete list of nominees here. The event itself, hosted by UNO professor Sofia Jawad-Wessel begins with a 6 p.m. cocktail hour and set by DJ Madix, with the after-party at Slowdown with DJ Mellie Mel, Houston Alexander and Spencelove.

Photo Coverage: The Faint, Closeness, Plack Blague at Slowdown
HN multimedia intern Lauren Farris caught night one of The Faint’s two-night run at Slowdown this past weekend. Todd Fink pulled double-duty as his electronic project Closeness, with Orenda Fink, opened the show, as did Lincoln industrial act Plack Blague.
