The Hanyaks are the brainchild of front man Monte Peck. Meaning hooligans, the name is a throwback to his Czech heritage. It is also an homage to his younger brother, Marshall, who has the tendency to get a little rowdy from time to time.
Standing 6’6″ in his cowboy boots, Peck looks more like a linebacker than a rock star. Ironically, he taught himself to play guitar after being sidelined with a teenage football injury. A native of Hallettsville, Texas, Peck quickly rose to fame as a local singer/songwriter but there wasn’t much of an outlet for his musical expression around those parts. He eventually made his way to Austin in 2001 where he paid his dues.
The Hanyaks’ debut album, The Breakdown, was released February 3, 2009- the fiftieth anniversary of the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper. While it received many favorable reviews, The Breakdown has yet to sell more that 10,000 copies. Their sophomore attempt, Like a Parthian Shot was released May 18, 2010. With no subsequent tour for promoting Like A Parthian Shot, initially, it’s tangible sales were small but as of 2013, digital sales of the album have more than tripled. The album’s lone single, Exbestfriend, is believed to be responsible for the downloads.
Following the CD release in 2010, Peck moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to unleash his pop-rock fury on the mid west. After a 5 year hiatus, Monte has assembled a new group of Hanyaks: Mike Selvage on drums, Ash Sharp on bass/backing vocals, and Robert Klingsporn on guitar.
This new incarnation of The Hanyaks plan to release the first half of a two part EP and their third full length album in 2016.
