Bonne Finken was born to sing. But it took a battle with cancer to really get her in gear. “By July 1st (2005), doctors had said, ‘You’re clear,’ and by the end of July, I was in my first band. It was a very immediate response.”
From there, Finken quickly made a name for herself in Des Moines’ local scene as a voice-for-hire, performing rock and disco covers for various bands, and writing hooks for a local hip hop act. It was through the latter that Finken began to discover herself as a songwriter, and soon she was hiring her own band, and performing originals. It was at this time that Finken was first approached with the opportunity for national exposure. Producers for the CBS reality show “Rock Star: Supernova” invited Finken to compete for the chance to front a super group that included Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), Jason Newsted (Metallica) and Gilby Clarke (Guns ‘N’ Roses). Though it could have been a catapult to success, Finken ultimately turned the opportunity down, stating that she preferred to focus on her own material.
In 2008, Finken independently released “Soul on Display”, her first collection of original work. The attention the album garnered led to gigs with nationally recognized acts like The Verve Pipe, as well as landing Finken a spot at the 2009 South by Southwest conference in Austin, TX.
Not content to rest on laurels, Finken was back in the studio a year later, eventually releasing the EP “Expectation Fall” in 2011. It was the success of this album that allowed Finken to devote herself to music full time and she hit the ground running, performing over 150 shows a year, including gigs at the Sundance Film Festival, U.S. Cellular’s World Food Festival and private functions for city and state leaders.
The past year has only seen Finken’s profile grow: Summer of 2014 saw the groundbreaking release of Finken’s third independent album, “Fairytales/LoveAffairs”, which included collaboration with multi-platinum talents Brandon Darner (Slipknot, The Envy Corps, Imagine Dragons) and Michael Krompass (Smash Mouth, Nelly Furtado, Natasha Bedingfield) along with trusted band mate and owner of The Sonic Factory Studios, Jon Locker (Bonne’s debut ‘Soul on Display’ album). The album received 100% positive reviews nationwide and was sold in hundreds of stores across Iowa. Finken was awarded ‘Best Musician – 2014’ by Des Moines Cityview Magazine and changed the scope of the local scene when she became the first independent Iowa artist to receive regular rotation Top 40 radio station STAR 102.FM (KSTZ) with her lead single, ‘Step Back Baby’.
In 2015, she followed up with a second showing on commercial radio via rock station LAZER 103.3 with her second single, ‘Fall’. Both singles, along with numerous tracks from “Fairytales/LoveAffairs”, have reached as high as #1 on AAA radio across the nation and have been featured on local commercials and national television shows (i.e. MTV’s The Real World: Skeletons – 2015).
Finken’s passion for and commitment to her own songs—combined with a magnetic stage presence, accomplished songwriting and dynamic, soulful vocals—continues to win her new fans with every performance.
