A dying Line 6 amplifier caught Caroline Smith off guard early in her set, only to be interrupted by a concertgoer's shattering pint glass a few songs later.
Despite the mood misfortunes, the 20 or so spectators at Vega on Thursday enjoyed the casual side of the Minneapolis guitarist and songwriter’s stage presence, including a few sing-along opportunities and jokes about her red plaid outfit being fit for the Christmas season. Smith carried herself onstage with charisma and soulful vocals which seemed to stimulate her backing band. Fitting for an inspired pre-Valetine’s Day set, Smith performed heavily from her balladic new album Half About Being A Woman.
From the onset, Vega felt more like a coffee shop on Thursday night with a stripped-down set from Omaha's Jordan Smith (Twinsmith), who was joined by guitarist and bandmate Matt Regner. And wielding her omnipresent ukulele, Becky Lowry followed with her Omaha band All Young Girls Are Machine Guns.
