The way in which I met Sara Bertuldo is indicative of the connectedness of Nebraska music. I was at a show they were playing in Omaha with The Betties and All Young Girls Are Machine Guns; Spencer Powell, banjo player for the Betties, is a good friend of mine, and happens to be Bertuldo's stepcousin. He introduced me to her after the show, and we got to talking about H&D doing an X-Rated in-studio.
Since their visit to the KZUM studios in downtown Lincoln last Thursday, Bertuldo not only helped me set up another in-studio with a touring band (I Hate You Just Kidding), but she also emailed me a song she thought I'd enjoy for the radio show. Just because.
This sense of camaraderie and cooperation is what I love about the Nebraska music scene.
H&D is currently recording their first full-length album; they released an EP in 2009, "What Became of What I Love."
"We have a few copies left. if you want one, you can just come up to me and give me a compliment and I'll give you one," Bertuldo said with a laugh.
H&D (and that's with an ampersand, mind you) described their music as "I want make music, mom is happy, dad is too." Take it as you will.
To hear more about how ice cream contributed to the formation of Honey & Darling, their songwriting process and why Bertuldo sought Asian musicians when she first started playing, listen to the podcast below, recorded Thursday, July 7.
