When Esquire awarded Slowdown the award for Club of the Year, the magazine wrote "It looks exactly like the venue musicians dream of pulling the van up to." Be it a band like The Breeders, Girl Talk, The Hold Steady occupying the large main stage, or a local band playing the second stage (which, when unused, can maybe hold five four-tops), the Slowdown is set up to deal with shows of almost all sizes. The ambience is both industrial with an exposed ceiling that's almost entirely painted black and intimate with soft lighting. An outdoor drinking/smoking area offers a refuge for those who want to take a breather from a sweat-inducing show.

The rare nights the Slowdown doesn't host a band, patrons may gather for a pub quiz or $2 pint nights on Monday. When the lights come up after a show, some attendees may be seen breaking out a game of Boggle, Sorry!, or Monopoly (the Seinfeld edition) from a shelf full of board games. The ample parking setup ensures a relatively quick trek to your car, a bonus for those -15 degree nights.
