“Karate” by Andreas Kapsalis & Goran Ivanovic Guitar Duo | Video Feature

words by Michael Todd | photos by Chris Dinan

What is the origin of a splat, a pow or kerplunk? Andreas Kapsalis and Goran Ivanovic might have the answer: It's inside the bodies and necks of their guitars.

The duo from Chicago smacks and plucks the onomatopoeias out of their instruments in this video filmed at The Zoo Bar as part of Lincoln Calling 2012. They recreate the soundtrack to kung fu and karate movies by employing a heaping handful of time- and practice-honored performance techniques. No wonder an audience member blurts out a clear expletive after the final note.

"This is kind of a soundtrack to the subplots that go on," Kapsalis says, "and just the great fun that those movies are."
