Tickets: $7
Since first picking up a 6-string at the ripe age of 14, Shenandoah, IA, native Matt Cox has gone on to produce an illustrious catalog of timeless songs, hymns full of lonely highways, distillery lunch breaks, longing and realization.
After handling sticks for Phoenix, AZ, based Junk Ditch Road for a short stint in 2002 then later establishing his self as a vibrant part of the Omaha singer/songwriter scene, Cox released the celebrated Folker’s Travels in 2007. Since his formative time in AZ, Cox has begun to define his singular style and toured a good part of the United States. Reaching new fan bases in towns like Denver, CO where he played an integral part of A Moveable Feast, a songwriters co-op, and Austin, TX where he was invited two years in a row to perform at their prodigious SXSW festival. Meanwhile local stages like The Waiting Room, Barley Street Tavern, Venue 51, and McKenna’s Blues, Booze & BBQ – allow Cox to bring his foot-stomping, white-boy blues and old-time country to a constantly ever-growing fan-base.
After three years of traveling and about 300 solo performances later, Cox formed the Matt Cox Band in the summer of 2008, and released his second group of highly anticipated songs entitled My Last Dollar on his own independent label – Down Home Records in the spring of 2009. With what started as a trio consisting of friends Seth Ondracek (bass) and Ben Zinn (electric guitars), then became a full-force five piece ensemble adding piano man Nick Semrad and Andrew Tyler (drums) in 2009. The guys followed up the album release with a southwest tour through Colorado and Arizona.
2011 brought the release of Matt’s third album, Tracks in the Sound, recorded with his band in one weekend at Lincoln’s Fuse Recording and mastered by Doug Van Sloan at Focus Mastering in Omaha. The departure of his friends and band mates as they pursued opportunities outside the Midwest, brought a whole new band line-up including Walker Gerard (drums), Vern Fergesen (bass and backup vocals) and Colin Duckworth (electric guitars). A variety of local shows, regional gigs and multiple festivals have made the new line-up one of the best in the area.
Five-time Omaha Entertainment & Arts Award winner for Best Country/Americana (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and Best Blues (2009) speaks to the caliber of artist Matt Cox and his band have become in the studio and on stage. With a live show that showcases some of the best players in the region, and a raw energy that reveals the passion and experience that friends share with each other on stage and off. Whether you crave the guitar driven jams of the Allman Brothers, the story telling of Dylan, or the country charm of Willie Nelson, The Matt Cox Band is sure to deliver!
August 8, 2014 is the release of Nishnabotna, the fourth album from Matt Cox and his band recorded over the past year with a variety of players at Hidden Tracks Studio/J Garrett Sound Productions.
