Daniel Christian, Hussies release new EPs

Lincoln songwriter Daniel Christian has made good on his planned two-part EP series, this week releasing Toast, the follow-up to July’s Coffee. The seven-track effort builds on its predecessors’ sampling of ‘90s rock themes, from big hooks and splashy solos to piano-driven melodies and Gin Blossoms-esque pouts. It’s just as upbeat as the last, though (and makes for a perfect breakfast pairing).

Christian and his band will perform both EPs consecutively at a release show Tuesday, Nov. 22 at The Space (5900 S 58th St). 7 p.m. show, RSVP here.

This week brought more new music, with Omaha punk rock band Hussies giving us not one but two EPs as part of a three-part planned release. Nowhere is the latest of the two, recorded last November at ARC Studios with Adam Roberts and out on tape December 1. Hussies plays it rhythmically straight ahead on Nowhere, making room for plenty of dissonance and vocalist Tom Bartolomei’s towering shout. Listen below.

Part one of the series, Going, also caught a digital release this past week. Guitarist Ben Eisenberger tells HN this one was recorded back in 2013, and in addition of finding the light of day, will get its own Dec. 1 tape release. Hussies will record and release part three, Fast, within the next few months. Before all that, the band plays a free release show at Pageturners Lounge Monday, Dec. 4.

Friday

An Evening with Umoja Choir – This Omaha-based multicultural choir started in 2010, when its founders Dieudonne Manirakiza and Eric Erson moved to Omaha. Originally the Burundian Choir, they changed the name to Umoja (Swahili for “unity”) as it welcomed members from Kenya, Rwanda, Congo, Uganda and Tanzania. The choir performs tonight as part of fundraising efforts aiding the recording of their first album. They already have some help from Mynabirds’ Laura Burhenn, who launched a GoFundMe campaign after collaborating with Manirakiza and Erson on some of her latest album Be Here Now. Watch the video Burhenn made below and RSVP to tonight’s 6 p.m. show — which also features performances by Mesonjixx, DB Tamang and Sarah Rowe — here.

Domestic Blend with KHARI the Duo at Harney Street Tavern – Omaha rock/pop/funk band Domestic Blend hits Harney Street Tavern in celebration of the release of its debut EP Space and Grit. HN premiered its first single “Don’t Go” earlier this week; read up here. KHARI the Duo hops on in support. 9 p.m., RSVP here.

Halfloves, I Forgot To Love My Father, A Ferocious Jungle Cat at Zoo Bar – Lincoln’s blues haven will hop tonight with Iowa City indie rockers Halfloves. The band’s 2016 self-titled album, produced by Imagine Dragons producer Brandon Darner, explores the darker side of love through layered soundscapes and crescendos reminiscent of more focused, Foals-style rock. A pair of Lincoln bands in IFTLMF and A Ferocious Jungle Cat fill out the bill. 7 p.m., $5, 18-plus, RSVP here.

Saturday

Lizzo with DOJA CAT at Slowdown – I hope you’re ready to feel good as hell. Minneapolis-based hip-hop artist Lizzo comes through Omaha Saturday with a voice of gold and the bangin’ tracks to match. Lizzo arrived on the scene in 2013 with her debut EP Lizzobangers and hopped on an international tour with Har Mar Superstar. Two more solo albums later, most notably her Oct. 2016 major label debut Coconut Oil, and she’s practically a star. R&B vocalist DOJA CAT opens the show. 9 p.m. show, $18 advance/$20 day-of. RSVP here.

Wavves, Joyce Manor, Culture Abuse at Vega – The Lincoln Railyard venue hosts another loud, smashing show just days after Trash Talk ripped it up. San Diego rockers Wavves, emo rock band Joyce Manor and grunge punk band Culture Abuse roll through Vega Saturday. Wavves released its whopping sixth full-length album You’re Welcome this past spring. The foursome actually collaborated with tourmates Culture Abuse for a new track “Up And Down,” which can be heard below. As for Joyce Manor, catch up with frontman Barry Johnson via HN social media intern Ben Buchnat’s Q&A for the Daily Nebraskan here and watch his conversation with See Through Dresses vocalist/guitarist Sara Bertuldo from 2015 here. 9 p.m. show, $20, all-ages, RSVP here.

Sunday

J. Crum at Reverb Lounge – Omaha hip-hop artist J. Crum celebrates the CD release of his new EP Flawed Sunday night in Benson. It’s Crum’s first record since his blistering, creative full-length Black Sheep in 2016. Performers from the Streetlight Sounds roster will make an appearance as well. 8 p.m. show, all-ages, $8 adv/$10 day-of. RSVP here.
