Whether they evoke an old memory or simply stand out in the verse, Bright Eyes' lyrics tend to cut deep. The line that resonates with me: "I'm a cartoon, you're a full moon, let's stay up" from the song "Hot Knives" off of the album Cassadaga.

A Celebration Upon Completion
This year 2011, was my graduation year, and before I left, my English teacher wanted everyone in the class to make her a CD based on our life goal's and dreams. The last song on my track list was this song, and the lyrics reached out to me. It's very hard trying to find just one song to pick, but I did my best.
"And they held on to each other with all the strength they had
And they loved with devotion beyond what I understand
But I guess fear has a way of making sleep unbearable
And the days seem dark and long
But we cry and we dance
And we stumble into love with perfect, awkward grace
The moon is gone and the sun has took its place."

I WIll Be Grateful For This Day
Song: I Will Be Grateful For This Day
Album: Noise Floor
Lyric:
"And we'd get drunk and kiss
Our bodies twist like shoelaces
And we never came untied"
That lyric is impeccable.
Ticket Giveaway.
This was a ridiculously hard decision because there absolutely isn't one song I can think of that I've ever felt negative towards that Bright Eyes has done. I decided on this one because it's an all time favorite and reminds me of a favorite place of mine called Ender's Lake where we'd fish and listen to BE near my hometown here in Nebraska and since this is a lyric competition I thought this would be best because it sums up perfectly how I felt when I first heard Bright Eyes ever.
The song is..
Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and To Be Loved)
The album is..
Lifted Or The Story Is In The Soil, Keep Your Ear To The Ground
The whole song is amazing of course, but the lyrics I picked are...
But where was it when I first heard that sweet sound of humility?
It came to my ears in the god damn loveliest melody.
How grateful I was then to be part of the mystery.
To love and to be loved, let's just hope that is enough.
Favorite lyrics by Bright Eyes
I got no plans and too much time
I feel too restless to unwind.
Song Title: We Are Nowhere and It's Now
From the album: I'm Wide Awake It's Morning
Something Vague--Fevers and Mirrors
"Now and again it seems worse than it is, but mostly the view is accurate."
favorite lyric
"My veins are full of flat cherry-cola"
from the song "Firewall"
on the album The People's Key
Don't Know When But A Day Is
Don't Know When But A Day Is Gonna Come
LIFTED or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground
Is it true what I heard about the Son of God?
Did he die for us? Did he die at all?
And if I sold my soul for a bag of gold,
Which one of us would be the foolish one?
Which one of us would be the fool?
Which one of us would be the foolish one?
Which one of us would be the fool?
"Train Under Water"
And I know you have a heavy heart; I can feel it when we kiss
So many men stronger than me have thrown their backs out trying to lift it
But me I'm not a gamble you can count on me to split
The love I sell you in the evening, by the morning won't exist.
"Im Wide Awake, it's Morning"
Land Locked Blues
If you walk away, I'll walk away
First tell me which road you will take
I don't want to risk our paths crossing someday
So you walk that way, I'll walk this way
this one gets me every time......
Sweet Bright Eyes Lyrics
"Theres kids playing guns in the streets and ones pointing his tree branch at me, so i put my hands up and said enough is enough, if you walk away ill walk away, and he shot me dead."
Lua - Im Wide Awake Its Morning.
Lyric new
"So pleased with the daydream, that now living's no good."
"Lime Tree" from Cassadaga (2007)
Letting Off The Happiness, June On The West Coast
Where all the green of life had turned to ash
And I felt I was on fire, with the things I could have told you
I just assumed that you eventually would ask
And I wouldn't have to bring up my so badly broken heart,
And all those months I just wanted to sleep
And though spring, it did come slowly, I guess it did its part
My heart has thawed and continues to beat.
Spent on Rainy Days, Post Parlo split EP w/ Spoon
I bought a little from my brother's friend,
Well, just to get me by
I don't trust his cut
The effect is never as high as the mark-up
I think I'll print it in the personals that I'm looking for a match
Someone to light me up,
Someone to burn the proof of the things that I've done
Each day there are hours I skip like a stone
I just crawl in a bag
I'm gonna live my life like somebody's shadow
Bowl of Oranges - LIFTED
But if the world could remain within a frame like a painting on a wall, well I think we'd see the beauty then, and stand staring in awe at our still lives posed like a bowl of oranges.
Favorite Lyric
How could this not be your favorite?
So I'm pouring some whiskey, I'm gonna get drunk
Yeah, I'm pouring myself some whiskey, I'm going to get really fucking drunk
I'm pouring some whiskey right now, I'm going to get so, so drunk
from "It's Cool We Can Still Be Friends" on Noise Floor: Rarities 1998-2005
These lyrics floored me the first time I heard them.
"If I could change my mind, change the paradigm,
Prepare myself for another life,
Forgive myself for the many times,
I was cruel to something helpless and weak."
The remorse in these lines is accentuated by the fourth line not rhyming. Brilliant.
I Will Be Grateful For This Day
I Will Be Grateful For This Day
Noise Floor
"I had a friend who changed his name
But couldn't change himself
Never quite figured out
How to deal with what life had dealt
He put a needle in his arm to calm his handsome hell
Who would've imagined it
Could've worked out so well?
Now he's a shape that moves
Like echoes through my empty room
And there's a voice that speaks
Like someone's right behind me
I turned around and found exactly what you would expect
The clothes I left on my floor
The papers piled on my desk
But where the ink is wet, the cause, effects
What's meant by it?
The story that is incomplete
The picture's left unfinished."
