Our massive weekend photo spread starts in Blackstone, where the Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards relocated its annual summer showcase from Benson for the first time. Seven venues, including Blackstone Meatball, Almost Music and Scriptown Brewery, participated in the revamped event. HN’s Marti Vaughan caught some of the action, and her photos are below.

Photo coverage: Edem Soul Music’s “African Body, Soul & Movement” at KANEKO
Omaha singer-songwriter Edem Soul Music showcased on Friday her “African Body, Soul & Movement” performance at KANEKO, guiding the audience from one everyday sound to the next, from the hums of nursing to the buzzes of the present. Edem sang over African-style percussion and incorporated a storyline taking listeners over time from Africa to modern America. Photo coverage: Evan Bartels & the Stoney Lonesomes, Orion Walsh at Hear Lincoln
Dozens of Lincolnites made it to Tower Square on Friday night when Orion Walsh & The Rambling Hearts’ and Evan Bartels & The Stoney Lonesomes’ brands of folk rock washed over downtown Lincoln, audible from blocks away. During the show, Bartels made clear his admiration for Walsh, crediting Walsh’s past records with personal, affective folk songs as inspirations. Walsh’s set saw the Lincoln singer-songwriter constantly coaxing audience members into joining him on stage to play either the kazoo or a washboard. Speaking of Bartels, he dropped a music video for his upcoming record’s title track “The Devil, God & Me” on Sunday. Rather than engaging in any visual frills, the video turns its focus on Bartels soft strumming and his rich, soulful vocals. For nearly seven minutes, Bartels sings verse after verse welcoming death and consulting Satan and Jesus for a direction. Pop-punk icons Green Day returned to Omaha on Saturday night for the first time since their 2009 21st Century Breakdown tour. Photo coverage: Stone, Bib, Jocko and Loud Minority at Milk Run
Four hardcore punk bands packed Milk Run on Sunday night, filling the Omaha basement DIY venue from wall-to-wall and forcing audience members to watch from the back ramp leading upstairs. Milwaukee’s Stone stopped in Omaha for the night, and local punk bands Bib, Jocko and Loud Minority added local support. Hardcore dancing ensued as the bands ran through their sets, with arms flailing and feet pounding the floor to each breakdown. Check out HN’s Lauren Farris’ and Ben Semisch’s photos below.

HN Radio, Week of 8.14.17
Special submissions, new releases and a big week for Nebraska music inform this week’s HN Radio playlist refresh, available now at the top of the website as well as below.
This week in submissions, we have tracks from Matt Whipkey, AllSortsOfGood and Sleep Sinatra, as well as Omaha rapper Rey Styles. Styles, who has been performing in the city since 2013, released “Summer Time” in July, which also features rapper J. Crum. It follows Styles’ 2016 Confessions mixtape. He says he’ll release another on Sept. 8, and hints a handful of upcoming performance dates; stay tuned. As for Whipkey, the Omaha rocker released a cover of The Beatles’ “Drive My Car,” in reference to his new album Driver, which chronicles his time as an Uber/Lyft operator. The weekend will bring two big Nebraska music events in Maha Music Festival and the final two days of HN’s Good Living Tour. The current HN Radio playlist features local Maha artists The Hottman Sisters, High Up and The Faint, as well as a few of the artists you’ll hear at GLT stops in Lyons (Friday, RSVP here) and Hastings (Saturday, associated with SolFest; RSVP here).

Neighbors Church seeking musicians to perform during worship
A new church in northwest Lincoln is searching for singer-songwriters who are comfortable leading worship sets that include original songs, covers and hymns.
Neighbors Church currently meets once per week at the clubhouse at Brookside Apartments at 7300 Tallgrass Parkway, and applicants for the position would be part of a rotation of musicians who would play at one or two worships each month. Pay is $20 per hour for approximately 5 hours of service each week ‒ rehearsal and performance.

Pro-Magnum with Noah’s Ark Was A Spaceship at Pageturner’s Lounge – Two heavy Omaha rock bands hit Pageturner’s tonight when the metalheads in Pro Magnum and the stoner rockers in Noah’s Ark Was A Spaceship storm Dundee. Both bands have been relatively quiet of late ‒it’s NAWAS’s first show since the fall of 2017 ‒ so make sure to catch them tonight.
Tuesday
Pryss, Jocko and Justified Aggression at West Wing – Springfield, Illinois is best known as the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, but it’s also the hometown of hardcore punk band Pryss, which is stopping in Omaha tonight at DIY venue West Wing. The band put out a five-song EP, Sisyphus, in March, and now the band is touring the Midwest. Locals Jocko and Justified Aggression open the show. 10 p.m. All Ages. RSVP here.
