Grassroots Music Festival kicks off Friday; Battling Giants release live video

This Friday, the second ever Grassroots Music Festival will mix vintage classic rock acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Creedence Clearwater Revival with contemporary hip-hop artists Kid Cudi and Lupe Fiasco.

Kid Cudi headlines night one, which also features New Jersey rapper Fetty Wap, young Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller and local duo Both. Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd lead a Saturday run that includes Creedence Clearwater Revival and Blue Oyster Cult.

Saturday takes on a more rock-oriented tone, and will also include appearances by the oft-touring The Talbott Brothers and Kris Lager Band, who returns to Grassroots after performing there last year. The festival wraps Sunday with a heavy-hitting trio of Matisyahu, Lupe Fiasco and Schoolboy Q.

In only its second year, Grassroots has swelled to three days, with three-times the acts — no small feat for a young festival. Kudos to Omaha sports/entertainment agency The Dom Group for growing a strong weekend in just a couple of years.

Find the complete schedule for Grassroots Music Festival below. Three-day passes are around $100 while single day passes are around $58. RSVP here.

Omaha’s blues rock trio Battling Giants has released a live video and a batch of new tour dates.

The video comprises recent concert footage of Battling Giants performing “Hellwater Blues,” taken from the band’s last two tours.

“Hellwater Blues” burns slow at the start with frontman Lucas Smith’s smouldering guitar riff and Matt Limberg’s busy, trebbly bassline. Smith growls the heartbreak ballad with a mix of anguish, anger and delirium. The second half of “Hellwater Blues” takes off like a runaway train car, with crashing cymbals and speedy guitar lines.
