Digital Leather: Live at the 1200 Club | Full Performance

There was talk of using sound-deadening curtains.

Part of the narrative leading up to “Hear Nebraska — Live at the 1200 Club” last summer was a rare and anticipated, fish-out-of-water event. A stage which typically plays host to jazz musicians, acoustic virtuosos and classically-trained musicians was going to support three bands more accustomed to dark rooms and PBR-toting crowds that maybe paid five dollars to see them.

With no band was that narrative more pronounced than with the Shawn Foree-led synth punk band Digital Leather. In speaking with the vice president of programming and education with Omaha Performing Arts, Kenra Whitlock Ingram, prior to the show, she singled out Digital Leather. She noted the venue had “certainly not seen anything like Digital Leather before,” both in terms of genre and volume (that’s why the sound-deadening curtains.)

The last of the night’s three acts, following Kill County and Big Harp, Digital Leather performed as a five-piece with Foree on guitar and lead vocals. During moments of restraint, their set showcases the group’s distinct pop sensibility, jetting through choruses of “oh, oh, oh,” with Todd Fink looming above the high synth notes, while a thumping bassline punctures the whole set.

Below, find Digital Leather’s full “Hear Nebraska — Live at the 1200 Club” set, which airs Sunday, May 18 on NET at 10 p.m. CST. The entire-60 minute special will air on NET on May 20. NET Television, Omaha Performing Arts and Hear Nebraska partnered to present the concert June 7, 2013.
