Anthems, Sour Boy Bitter Girl and The SuperBytes | Hear Nebraska Presents

Hear Nebraska Presents:

Anthems
As their name suggests, the Omaha band’s songs seem most suited for a roomful of people who, if not singing along, at least would like to learn the words so next time they won’t miss shouting the chorus, drinks held aloft. In the tradition of Bruce Springsteen through Rise Against, Against Me and Gaslight Anthem, that room could equally be a dingy corner bar or a packed arena. It’s music that fills the space, any space, but is lofty enough not to bear down on an audience.

Sour Boy, Bitter Girl
The Fort Collins folk-inspired group returns to O’Leaver’s fresh off a nomination for Westword Music Awards in “Rock–Indie.” Their 2013 album, “The Days After the Fire,” finds vocalist Benjamin Buttice blurring the line between autobiographer and storyteller with clever turns of phrase and learned allusions in a gruff baritone on the wings of instrumentation that swings between nuanced Americana and room-filling chamber pop.

The SuperBytes
Omaha’s own 8-bit quintet rides the wave of its November debut album with shows around Omaha, including a Super Smash Bros tournament for their album release show and a benefit for Dragon’s Lair comic book store. All 13 tracks on their debut land faithfully between classic arcade game scores and The Offspring in their heyday — equal parts amusing nostalgia and musical earnestness.
