Wild Flag's Carrie Brownstein (vocals/guitar), Rebecca Cole (keys), Mary Timony (guitar) and Janet Weiss (drums) have built a clean mess of music. The Portland/D.C. band's performance Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the Waiting Room Lounge felt like reliving an era in music I thought was almost lost — I still cling to my PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, The Breeders days. I'm glad Wild Flag (ex-Sleater-Kinney, ex-Helium) is proving ladies can still kick ass at least as hard as the fellas, while adding a natural bit of sass. Openers Yellow Fever from Austin was a perfect fit on the bill, with their infectious, "haunted house surf music," in the words of Brownstein
