The Machete Archive never had to say a word. No explanation for the complex rhythms by Ian Francis, the soaring guitar by Ryan Thomas or the — yes, we'll say it — virtuosic bass playing by Saber Blazek.

When the band played its last concert at Duffy's Tavern on Saturday, Aug. 25, for the foreseeable future at least, they didn't have to make any speeches: It was clear what this music meant to all three staples of the Nebraska music scene, and only through the music did they have to send that message.

Blazek's piercing eyes and frequent contortions often drew the attention, but it was a synthesis of three musical minds that made The Machete Archive what it was, and what it lives on as through their recorded material and videos such as this one of "VII" filmed at their final show with UUVVWWZ and Jodie Loves Hinckley:
