Picks of the Week | X-Rated

by Hilary Stohs-Krause

Looking to see some lady music?

For the last six or so months, I've compiled a weekly calendar of events featuring women in music across Nebraska, but lately, it seems like a mere list of events and videos isn't the most constructive use of this space — especially since Intern Extradordinaire Kevin has started the Today's Shows feature.

Instead, I'm going to focus on a few shows each week that stand out for one reason or another — whether it's a CD release show, tour kickoff, a national act's first time in town or simply a great lineup.

Like the change? Don't like the change? Have any suggestions? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.

SUNDAY, SEPT. 11

Climates, *Lipstick Homicide, Domestica, Solace Taylor (poet)

Domestica, otherwise known as the newer, post-family Mercy Rule, is a Lincoln staple, and they don't play nearly often enough. Solid, infectious rock music. (As a bonus, Lipstick Homicide is a pop-punk group from Iowa fronted by two ladies.)

Duffy's Tavern, 1415 O St. in Lincoln
9 p.m.
$5

MONDAY, SEPT. 12

Tara Vaughan, Edge of Arbor and Kris Lager Band

It's tour time, and Tara and Edge of Arbor's Jessica Errett have a sweet fundraiser planned. Apart from the music, they'll be raffling off items including zoo passes, concert tickets, dance classes, guitar lessons and more; there'll also be a silent auction for several bigger prizes.

The Waiting Room, 6212 Maple St. in Omaha
8 p.m.
$7

TUESDAY, SEPT. 13

Irkutsk, Scammers and Space Minutes

Irkutsk is one of my favorite Lincoln bands. They play noise-y, math-y, weird rock (complete with burps), and lead singer Courtney Morrow has made a stunning transition from shy, unsure frontwoman to badass band leader. They just returned from tour, so let's welcome them back to town in style.

Icing on the cake? This show is by donation on dollar beer night. Even if you're the poorest of the poor, you have no excuse not to come.

Hilary Stohs-Krause's fondest wish is to own her own Tardis … or a Viper spaceplane. She gets her local music fix through HN and as a cocktail waitress at Duffy's Tavern.
