by Hilary Stohs-Krause

Looking to see some lady music?

Check here every Thursday for the best shows of the week featuring lady musicians — whether it's a CD release show, tour kickoff, a national act's first time in town or simply a great lineup.

Want your show to be considered? Post your event in HN's statewide music calendar, then shoot me an email at xrated@hearnebraska.org with the who, what, when, where, how much and why.

(I sincerely apologize for the awful misapropriation of Gillian's name in the teaser.)

THURSDAY, OCT. 13

*Gillian Welch

Gillian Welch crafts heartbreaking Appalachian folk/americana songs about whiskey, coal mining and orphans. She's a legend, guys. I first saw her at the Zoo Bar like five years ago, when I might or might not have been underage … but that's a different story. This pricier than most shows I feature, but well worth the cost.

Rococo Theatre, 140 N. 13th St. in Lincoln
8 p.m.
$25, $27.50

Gillian Welch:

LINCOLN CALLING: Conduits, Gauntlet Hair, UUVVWWZ

Bourbon Theatre, 1412 O St. in Lincoln
9:30 p.m.
$8, 18+

Conduits is one of the best bands to emerge from Omaha recently, featuring Jenna Morrison's soaring yet controlled vocals over an experienced backing band, including former members of Eagle*Seagull. UUVVWWZ just recently started playing shows together again after their drummer Tom's exodus, and Gauntlet Hair out of Denver has been building some decent buzz.

Conduits:

UUVVWWZ:

LINCOLN CALLING: Dirty Talker, *Cowboy Indian Bear, Snake Island, Irkutsk

Duffy's Tavern, 1415 O St. in Lincoln
9 p.m.
$5, 18+

Cowboy Indian Bear is one of my favorite regional "bear" bands, along with Bears of Blue River and the Wandering Bears (really, their just one of my favorites in general). The Lawrence, Kan. band plays in Nebraska every few months or so, and it's always a treat. Warm, quirky, harmonious indie pop. Lincoln band Irkutsk makes delicious noise-y math rock, replete with burps and curses. Love it.

FRIDAY, OCT. 14

LINCOLN CALLING: "X-Rated: Women in Music" showcase, featuring Honeybee & Hers, *Eliza Rickman, All Young Girls Are Machine Guns, Bol'd Crow, Meaner Pencil, Hana Kornbluh, Heather Sticka (of Tsumi)

Totes tooting my own horn here, but so it goes. 🙂 Some of my favorite women artists, together in one place, to play a wide variety of music and talk about their experiences as both musicians and women. The format will be similar to the Lady Songwriter Roundtable that Becky Lowry organized earlier this summer. Genres include singer-songwriter, bluegrass, avant-indie, blues, chamber folk and swing. And it's free!

Parrish Studios, 14th and O streets in Lincoln (above Duffy's, Gomez Art Supplies and A Novel Idea)
6 p.m.

*MEN w/ The Show is The Rainbow & Millions Of Boys

MEN: otherwise known as JD Samson from Le Tigre's new project. Brutally honest, the queertronica group uflinchingly delves into discussions of gender and sex norms amid stacatto beats and dance hooks. Millions of Boys is from Omaha and features Sara Bertuldo, also of Honey & Darling.

Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St. in Omaha
9 p.m.
$8, 21+

Millions of Boys:

SATURDAY, OCT. 15

*Dark Dark Dark w/ *Pillars and Tongues, Sean Pratt

Dark Dark Dark is like a raw, haunted Beirut. Passionate, chamber-gypsy-pop, with no dearth of accordion. Let them take you wandering.

House of Loom, 1012 10th St. in Omaha
9 p.m.
$8, 21+

Pillars and Tongues:

LINCOLN CALLING: Kill County, Matt Cox, The Betties, Lloyd McCarter

Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th St. in Lincoln
9 p.m.
$5, 21+

The Betties haven't played in Lincoln in ages – lead singer Heather Berney moved to Omaha for UNMC – so this is a show not to be missed. Beautiful, catchy, simple music about the county fair, murder, and above all else, love, in all its aching glory. Kill County is an americana wunderband that will make keds and cowboy boots alike stomp to the beat.  I haven't seen Matt Cox, but I've been told I should.

The Betties:

Hilary Stohs-Krause loves puns and cheesy wordplay, to the point of absurdity. She will often apologize for her jokes, but never for laughing at them. Hilary gets her local music fix through HN and as a cocktail waitress at Duffy's Tavern.
