No Name Diatribes & Upcoming Event Dandies | DJDD

Weekend Review

O Dining in the Old Market has recently remodeled and fitted their Asian/French fusion restaurant into a dual nightclub. Lots of sound, subs and an overkill on lights. But the place looks great. They had an "industry" party called Exhale, featuring Kobrakyle DJing with live violin by Kaitlyn Maria Filippini on Thursday. I recommend checking this place out soon. Some high potential there! And by the way, if you haven't seen Filippini do live violin with a DJ yet, you must not be going out. She's all over the place! But it's great to see some creative fusion going on.

Nerdtron is working hard these days. They hosted a dance party on Friday and Saturday during the Fashion in Detritus show. The Diamond on 16th Street, the venue, was a gem formerly known as The Hole and a gay bar before that. It had a great underground feel with a two-room set-up. Cay Combs of Nerdtron told me they're going to start doing monthly Nerdtron parties at the location. I'll be sure to mention that when they come along.

Sonic C was schedule for Nomad on Saturday via a Loud party. Unfortunately, the artist missed his flight, but the party went on without a hitch. Enso's show is getting tighter. Masaris sounded more death metal electro-ish. The crowd was great. And Sonic C will be back in the future.

No Name / Know Name Diatribe

This is the first in a series of diatribes covering an array of common misperceptions and overall annoying aspects of being a DJ.

No, I don't remember your name — and you should be OK with that.

A common scenario plays out on a regular basis: Someone comes to one of my parties, is casually introduced to me by a mutual friend in the midst of darkness, loudness and varying degrees of sobriety. It's a quick transfer, usually involving hello's, thanks-for-coming's and enjoy-your-night's. Pretty brief exchange.

Weeks or months later, I see you again and, lo and behold, I don't remember your name and possibly where and when we met. You get slightly perturbed and think I'm some jackass who doesn't have any mindfulness for others. This may happen more than once, even.

The point of this rant is — if this is you, don't take it personally. Think about it: That brief, initial exchange didn't really give me any measurable experience of significance from which to remember you. On the other hand, they possibly saw my name on the flyer that's in their pocket, saw me behind the DJ booth and dance and drink to the music, meaning they're having an experience with me, but I'm not with them.

Reading this back to myself, this diatribe sounds rather pompous, but it's all true. And hopefully by sharing this, feelings will be spared.
