“Movin'” by The Brakmen | Echoes

by John Wenz

Wild drums. Big organ. Surf rock licks. Some horn flourishes. Stumbling, mumbling, half shouted vocals. What the hell is this?

The Brakmen. Or The Six Wild Brakmen. Or whatever you want to call them. But whatever it is, there's a layer of freak garage to the whole thing. As the Nebraska Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame has said, there was perhaps no '60s band more wild than the Braksmen.

This is the B-side to “Minutes and Minutes,” but goes above and beyond that song. But whatever, they're both great songs, littered with sloppily screamed vocals, fuzztones galore and a bizarre little horn section. Plus, “Minutes and Minutes” has a sudden break for “In the Midnight Hour.”

A wildly overlooked band from Fremont, of all places, that deserves a new-found audience.
