Lil’ Kim at The Bourbon | Photo Review

Things Lil’ Kim can do: Make a Sprite can disappear in her mouth.

Things I can do: Drink a nice cold Sprite.

We’re basically a match made in heaven. OK, so that’s a little bit of a stretch, but Kim did say Nebraska has some very beautiful men.

She must have meant it, too, because the whole hour the 37-year-old Kim spent traipsing about the Bourbon Theatre’s main stage, she looked genuinely happy. Kim is a real stage presence, ruling the small venues and making everyone feel like they’re the only one Kim is looking at.

The same can’t be said for most of the opening acts. The show started off with some local acts who didn’t quite have it down yet. Maybe opening for the Queen Bee was too nerve-wracking or maybe they just weren’t ready for a real show. The lip-synching acts were out of breath on stage, singing along to the CD version of the songs, vocals already included.

The Queen Bee landed, though, and everything was all right. The Bourbon was equally as full as when I saw Manchester Orchestra there in November in support of a new LP. Kim, on the other hand, packed the house and hasn’t had an album out since 2005. Pretty impressive.
