Eric Nyffeler Knows Design | A Conversation

[Editor's note: A Conversation is a HN series that features two disparate members Nebraska's music scene interviewing each other about what they do best. This is part two. You can read part one here. We hope you learn a little.]

Fortunately for interviewer Dan McCarthy, it sounds as if Eric Nyffeler hasn’t told this story too many times. He’s held on to the creative joy of the one design that set a precedent for the rest.

For someone who says he can’t go through 30 seconds of seriousness without trying to be funny, Nyffeler excitedly and jokelessly tells the story of a poster created for New Jersey friends Biclops. It’s an important origin story for his studio Doe Eyed, which has created, among gobs of other work, many of Hear Nebraska’s aesthetics, including our logo.

Nyffeler (who also plays guitar in Lincoln bands Masses and Bus Gas) calls his watershed moment “the point where I stopped pretending to be somebody else and actually knew what I wanted to do.” All McCarthy can say is, “Wow.” Throughout the rest of the interview, McCarthy (of McCarthy Trenching) also asks about designers’ freedom, screen printing versus other methods and dealing with design rejection:

Michael Todd is Hear Nebraska's managing editor. He proudly owns a couple posters featuring Nyffeler's work. Reach him at michaeltodd@hearnebraska.org.
